27 September 2011: THE Caribbean and Americas Commonwealth Games Association delegates were treated to a classic Aussie backyard cricket match on Sunday to mark the conclusion of their Gold Coast visit. The game was played at a BBQ reception hosted by a local resident and included Indigenous entertainment and fielded a roll call of sporting stars and dignitaries. Read More >>


19 September 2011: Sporting heroes Sally Pearson and Samantha Stosur were welcomed home today by scores of Gold Coast fans. The 100 metres hurdles world champion and the US Open tennis winner were handed the keys to the city at a ceremony at Southport Broadwater Parklands.


16 August 2011: PAST and present Queensland athletes were out in force to welcome the European and Canadian Commonwealth Games Association delegates during their three day visit to the Gold Coast. Commonwealth and Olympic Games champion diver, Chantelle Newbery, former Australian Hockey Captain Daph Pirie, Commonwealth Games bronze medal shooter, Anne-Marie Forder and Olympic champion and Commonwealth Games medallist, Sara Carrigan shared their experiences and enthusiasm for a 2018 Games at various events across the visitation program. March 2011: Scotsman and Glasgow local Sean Newall is attempting to cycle across all Commonwealth countries in an epic ‘Commonwealth Challenge’ to raise money for charity and highlight the impending 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid Team presented Sean with a Gold Coast 2018 Bid Pack and an Australian Flag when he passed through Gold Coast City. The challenge is in aid of Unicef's Sports for Development Campaign which uses sport-based programmes to improve children’s lives and to strengthen communities.

March 2011: Commonwealth Games Federation CEO, Mike Hooper, made a formal visit to Gold Coast City for final discussions regarding the bid process for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

11 March 2011: On Friday 11 March two swimming greats, Grant Hackett OAM and Giaan Rooney OAM, were inducted into the Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame. The event recognises and celebrates the outstanding achievements of renowned Gold Coast athletes. The Bid Team would like to congratulate both Grant and Giaan on their achievements and inclusion into the Hall of Fame.
