About Us

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid team was formed in July 2010 and commenced work on the Bid ably led by former Australian Sports Commission CEO, Mark Peters.

Peter’s wealth of experience as an athlete and administrator was complimented by a team of professionals with backgrounds in sport, events, public relations, business, finance, infrastructure, logistics and transport. The team was also assisted by the Queensland Government with ready access to its whole of Government resources and the Gold Coast City Council, forming a cooperative partnership with a common goal - to win the Bid!

The Bid Board chaired by Olympian and Commonwealth Games medal winning swimmer, Mark Stockwell worked to develop strategic relationships across the community including the formation of the Council Consultative Committee, the Business and Community Consultative Committee and the Athlete’s Advisory Committee. The state Government established an Interdepartmental Steering Committee and collectively the groups contributed strategic support and expertise to the Bid Board and team.

A comprehensive communications plan that included the highly successful school’s programme – Adopt a Commonwealth Country, saw the Gold Coast City community embrace the Bid and the opportunity to be involved in a ‘life changing’ initiative for their city.

From the school students and teachers, the city’s national sporting teams, Mums and Dads - to the City’s politicians and business community – the, ‘We’re behind the Bid’ message stretched far and wide in a visual demonstration of support and enthusiasm for what would become a successful Bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation is the Organising Committee, established to plan and deliver the XXI Commonwealth Games.
